Dr Paal Hilde

Dr. Paal Hilde is professor of war studies at the Institute for Defence Studies (IFS), which is part of the Norwegian Defence University College. He earned his DPhil in politics at the University of Oxford (St. Antony’s College) in 2003. Paal has previously worked on policy planning and NATO at the Norwegian Ministry of Defence and has led the secretariat for two government-appointed commissions

His main research interests include Norwegian security and defence, NATO and Arctic security. Among other things, Paal is the inaugural Norway Chair at the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies. His most recent publication on the Arctic is “The High North and the Arctic”, in Bjørn Erik Rasch et.al. (eds.), Oxford Handbook of Norwegian Politics, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2025, pp. 897-914 (with Sven Holtsmark).
