Andrew E. Yaw Tchie

Andrew E. Yaw Tchie is a Senior Research Fellow at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) and Manager of the Training for Peace Programme. His research focuses on African-led peace support operations and stabilisation missions, United Nations peacekeeping operations in Africa, partnerships between the United Nations, the African Union, and regional organisations, as well as the evolving relationship between climate change, peace, and security on the continent.

Andrew’s work also examines the evolution of African militaries and the role of security institutions in post-conflict societies. His forthcoming edited book, The Evolution of African Armies: From Indigenous and Colonial Forces to Modern Military Forces, explores how African armed forces are adapting to new and emerging security challenges, including how states utilise international partnerships, peacekeeping deployments, and military training to strengthen national and regional security capacities.

Alongside his research at NUPI, Andrew serves as Editor-in-Chief of the African Solutions (AfSol) Journal at the Institute for Peace and Security Studies and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Buckingham. His work frequently engages with policy debates on peacebuilding, stabilisation, and security cooperation across Africa.

Andrew has previously held research and policy positions at several leading institutions, including King’s College London, the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), where he managed the Armed Conflict Database. Earlier in his career he worked with the United Nations mission in South Sudan and Sudan, as well as with UNDP in Nepal, contributing to peacebuilding and stabilisation initiatives in complex conflict environments.
