Benjamin Neimark

Benjamin Neimark is a Reader at the School of Business and Management and a former Fellow at the Institute of Social Science and Humanities (IHSS) at Queen Mary University of London. He is a human geographer and political ecologist whose research focuses on the environmental and social impacts of global supply chains, extractive industries, and the climate footprint of large institutions, particularly militaries.

His current work examines the US military as a global climate actor and, more broadly, the environmental impacts of the world’s militaries. He leads a UKRI-funded project on military critical mineral supply chains and decarbonisation, using a geopolitical ecology lens to analyse the political economy of military institutions and their role in multi-scalar environmental and climate breakdown. He is co-creator of the Military Emissions Gap project, which advocates for full and transparent reporting of military greenhouse gas emissions to the UNFCCC.

Benjamin’s work also includes research on conservation labour and environmental governance, including Hottest of the Hotspots: The Rise of Eco-Precarious Conservation Labour in Madagascar (2023) which examines market-based conservation programmes and their impacts on local communities. Across his work, he contributes to debates on environmental governance, responsible sourcing, and the political economy of climate and ecological breakdown.
