Dr Andrew Mumford
Dr Andrew Mumford is the University of Nottingham’s first ever Professor of War Studies. He is the editor of the Bloomsbury book series ‘Studies in Contemporary Warfare’ and Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of International Security (published by Cambridge University Press). He has published 4 books on facets of modern conflict.
He has extensive experience in researching and engaging with policy makers on the central premise of this project – namely responding to actions in the ‘grey zone’ of modern conflict. He is a member of the EU/NATO Hybrid Threats Centre of Excellence expert pool on security and has published a policy brief for NATO on the topic of ambiguity in hybrid war-waging. Consulted by the UK Ministry of Defence and NATO on issues relating to hybrid warfare Professor Mumford has twice given oral evidence to the House of Commons Defence Select Committee on hybrid threats, including the ‘UK Response to Hybrid Threats’ inquiry in 2019 and the ‘Defence in the Gray Zone’ inquiry in 2024. In addition, he has conducted private briefings for the House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee on the same topic.
Between May 2020 and July 2022, he was a Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) Knowledge Exchange Fellow in the House of Commons International Affairs Unit (IAU), where he aided parliamentary scrutiny of conceptions of deterrence and intervention as posed in the government’s Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy.
Listen to Dominic Bowen and Dr Andrew Mumford unpack how grey zone warfare and strategic ambiguity are reshaping modern conflict, and read our analysis on why these sub-threshold tactics now sit at the centre of geopolitical risk for governments, businesses, and societies.
