Dr. Brian Fonseca

Dr. Brian Fonseca is a leading voice on national security, foreign policy, and cybersecurity. He currently serves as Director of the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy and is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Florida International University’s Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, where he also leads Cybersecurity@FIU, the university’s interdisciplinary program focused on cybersecurity research and policy development.

At the intersection of academia, policy, and public engagement, Brian is both a rigorous scholar and a real-world insider to complex global issues. He is a Cybersecurity Policy Fellow and International Security Fellow with the think tank New America in Washington, D.C., contributing to discussions on emerging threats and governance in the digital age. He regularly comments across local, national, and international media, and he is the on-air political analyst for South Florida’s WSVN-Fox News, where he breaks down current events.

Dr. Fonseca has also provided expertise at the highest levels of government, having testified before the U.S. Congress on matters of security and policy.

A published author and editor, his work explores the dynamics of governance, security, and geopolitics in the Americas. His recent books include Culture and National Security in the Americas and Democracy and Security in Latin America, and he is co-author of The New US Security Agenda: Trends and Emerging Threats. His research tackles topics such as cyberspace, great-power competition, and the political landscapes of Venezuela, China, and Russia.

Before entering academia, Brian built a foundation in international security through service in the United States Marine Corps from 1997 to 2004, where he trained foreign military forces in both combat and peacetime environments. He later served as Senior Research Manager for Socio-Cultural Analysis at United States Southern Command’s Joint Intelligence Operations Center South.

Dr. Fonseca earned his undergraduate degrees in International Business and International Relations from Florida International University and pursued his studies at Sichuan University in China and the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. He completed his doctoral degree in Political Science and Government at Florida International University.
