Duncan Depledge
Duncan Depledge is a British researcher working on climate security, defence policy and the geopolitics of the Arctic. He is Senior Lecturer in Geopolitics and Security at Loughborough University.
His research focuses on the implications of climate change for the changing and future character of war. It also examines the shifting geopolitics of the Arctic, and how this impacts security and defence in the UK and Europe. He is the author of Britain and the Arctic, published in 2018.
Alongside his interdisciplinary academic background, Duncan has extensive experience of working with government, parliamentarians, think tanks, international organisations and militaries. He spent 2010 to 2014 as a Research Analyst on the Climate Change & Security Programme at the Royal United Services Institute, before helping to establish the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Polar Regions in Westminster, serving as its first Director from 2015 to 2019. He also served as Special Adviser to the House of Commons Defence Committee during its inquiry on ‘UK Defence in the Arctic’ (2017-2018), and has provided advice to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the Ministry of Defence, NATO and the European Commission.
