Episode 167: Navigating the Role of the UN in the Hamas-Israel War with Rosa Freedman

At the International Risk Podcast, we aim to highlight key risks and global issues from all over the world, particularly those that fall through the cracks of mainstream media; and today’s podcast is no different. We are diving deep into the historical complexities and geopolitical intricacies of the Palestine-Israel conflict, with a particular focus on the United Nations’ role in the ongoing situation. The conflict, which has persisted for decades, saw a dramatic escalation post-7 October, reshaping international discourse and intensifying global scrutiny on humanitarian efforts and international law. Today, we critically examine the actions of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) amidst the crisis, the responses of the International Criminal Court (ICC), and the widespread protests that have erupted across the globe in reaction to the escalating violence.

Joining us today is Rosa Freedman, whose expertise in international law and human rights offers a unique lens through which to analyze these developments. Rosa Freedman is the inaugural Professor of Law, Conflict and Global Development at the University of Reading. She received her LLB, LLM, and PhD from the University of London and is a non-practising barrister and member of the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn. Her research focuses on the UN, human rights, and international law. She has published extensively on UN human rights bodies and systems, and on UN peacekeeping and accountability for human rights abuses.
