The Rise of the ALT-Right, NRx, and its Relation to Climate Change Denial

With the US Elections coming up comes the discussion of the influence of the far-right. To be precise, the ALT-Right and the NRx. This rise leads to numerous risks, one of them being the denial of climate change and Environmental Social Governance (hereinafter ESG). Roger Burrows claims that the Climate Change will be our biggest risk in the future. Listen here to hear more about the other two risks he mentions.

NRx, the ALT-Right and Links to the White House

NRx is an abbreviation to Neo-reactionism, which refers to the ‘dark enlightenment’. In other words, NRx is anti-democratic, anti-egalitarian, racist, fascist, white supremacist, and a reactionary philosophical and political movement. The followers of NRx want a return to traditional societal constructs and forms of government, including a return to absolute monarchism. This absolute monarchism can be achieved through a CEO model of government to replace democracy for example, and this would be called ‘capitalist monarchy’.

NRx believers believe that freedom is inherently incompatible with democracy and favours authoritarian governments. Moreover, they believe that Western governments are irreparably corrupt, and the only way to bring the system down is by accelerate the demise of democracy through chaos, violence, and political tensions. Believers have been labelled as alt-right and neo-fascist and are known for spreading terror.

During the 2016 US election, it came to light that the NRx had forged an alliance with a political movement self-described as “alt-right” (a loose coalition of white supremacists, masculinists, anti-feminists, old-school racists, Islamophobes, neo-monarchists, and anti-semites). NRx and the alt-right form an intensely supra-structural movement.

Steve Bannon, former Trump strategist, is a fan of NRx. And Trump’s rhetoric has become more and more in trend with the ALT-Right and NRx. Moreover, his perpetual use of misinformation and outright fiction shows Trump has been on sites from the ALT-Right, Neo-nazis, and NRx, amongst others. Musk, currently Trumps’ number one follower, has been helping the spread of misinformation, racism, and white supremacy.

The Trump campaign inflaming hate crimes and far-right activism is not without precedent. A study out of the University of North Texas on the 2016 Trump campaign, one that held nativist racism at its core, statistically proved that in places where Trump held one of his over 300 rallies there was a “226% increase in hate-motivated incidents”. In addition, Trump has been seen with far-right influencers more and more often, one of those examples is 9/11 conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer.

Climate Change Denial

With the hurricane Milton arriving, and hurricane Helene just having caused havoc in Florida, the discussion about climate change arises once again. Factually speaking climate change is very much real, and hurricanes are not only more likely to occur, they are more likely to be destructive. The warming of the ocean, because of global warming and specifically because of long-term greenhouse gas emissions, leads to better conditions for hurricanes. Helene was one of the deadliest storms in the US history, and its heavy rainfall and winds can be attributed to climate change. As much as hurricanes are a natural phenomenon, the category of the storms is going up, with upcoming hurricane Milton reaching the maximal mathematical limit of what a hurricane from that area can produce. This is reality.

Now what the issue is that more and more hurricanes reach category three or above, which is new. Moreover, the rapid intensification of the frequency of the hurricanes is what will be deadly too. With Helene just passed, Milton will destroy what was still standing, leading to not only climate disaster, but also financial disaster. If one does not care about the climate, like followers of the NRx and the ALT-Right, as well as Trump who has called climate change a hoax, one would think that the financial consequences would lead to action.

In addition, the rising of the sea levels ensures that certain coastal areas, like Florida, are more prone to flooding. As much as the IPCC mentions that there won’t be a rise of hurricanes, the increase of water and wind speeds is real. As stated previously, the category will increase, leading to more hurricanes in category four and five. With the way we are currently going, regarding global warming, we are on the way to have 4C extra, which entails that approximately 20% of hurricanes will reach category four or five. Action is required now, to stop the intensification of hurricanes. To save our planet. The biggest risk we are facing as a population is climate change and mostly the consequences of climate change, which we will all feel before 2050.
